I'm really confused and concerned about my chances for the schools I'm applying to and I'm hoping some of you can give me some insight =)
Background: I graduated with a degree in Secondary Education. Overall GPA was a 3.3 or so, 3.9 within the major. I'm certified to teach high school English in New York State and I'm employed by a couple of districts as a Per Diem Substitute, although I'm not sure if I can put that on my resume because they scarcely call me in to teach. I don't really have an abundant amount of SLP observation experience, but I think I'll be able to fluff that in my applications. I have 15 credits of speech prerequisites at the present and will have 24 by spring's end; my prereq GPA is a 3.6. My GRE scores are VERY low, but I'm retaking it and hoping for a miracle.
Now, I'm told it works to my advantage that I have a degree in another field, plus a certification, etc. However, I feel like I'm at a big disadvantage because schools will only have 5 speech-related grades to look at. Also, I'm only eligible to apply to a handful of schools based on the prereqs I have/will have come the fall.
My choices (the ones I've picked, anyway:)
Emerson (first choice by far)
Seton Hall
Adelphi
CW Post
Duquesne
Worcester State
Case Western Reserve
To say I'm going in blind (and somewhat desperate) is rather accurate, but I feel very stuck where I am right now and really want to move forward. I've researched the schools and am intrigued and satisfied with their programs, and I am CERTAIN this is what I want to do, but I feel obscenely pressured to get into any school that will accept me so I can get the ball rolling; I really can't afford to keep taking prerequisites, money and time wise, and then wait another year (or half year) to apply. I have thought about applying to post-bacc programs, but again, I really want to move away from being an undergrad. Also, the job market for teaching is horrific, and probably will stay that way even after the hiring freeze is lifted, and I'm not quite ready/passionate enough to move out of state to pursue a teaching career, it's sort of a last resort for me.
I could be acting dramatic, but I know this process is very competitive, and I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst just in case--although I'm also looking for some positive feedback and hope! So, if you have any advice or feedback (good or bad) regarding my chances at getting into any of these schools I'd love to hear it.
Thanks in advance guys! =)

I need to narrow down this list a bit, so I was wondering what sorts of imput anyone had about getting into these schools.
I included some schools that seemed out of reach and some that I could hopefully get into.
Does anyone have any ideas of good "back up schools" in a warm climate? (yea, i know...the cold here is getting to me)
Portland State University
Governor’s State
ADELPHI
Long Island University Brooklyn
California State University East Bay
University of Washington in Seattle
University of North Texas
Our Lady of the Lake University
Georgia State University
University of West Georgia
University of Central Florida
Appalachian State University
Texas A&M University Kingsville
Abilene Christian University
Valdosta State Univeristy
University of Hawaii
My GPA is a 3.36, GRE 1280 (540-Verbal 750-Math) writing i think i got a 4.5 but can't remember right now.
Any thoughts of chances on getting into any of htese schools or any helpful comments in general would be great.
Thanks so much!

Hi all!
Does anyone know if Louisiana State University's SLP program is more clinically based or research based?

Hi! I'm looking to apply to grad schools in Texas for 2010. Ideally I would like to go to University of Texas at Austin- but I had missed the deadline. The grad program closest to Austin is TSU. Does anyone have any information on the city of San Marcos? Also- how are Dallas and Houston? I'm not familiar with any of the cities (I know they have pretty decent speech programs) but I would like to know which one is the "better" city.
Which one is more lively?
Which one has the least crime rate?
Which one is younger?
Thanks!

sooo i was all ready to be done with this whole applying to grad school process and today i met with one of my professors to get my last letter of rec. she gave me a bunch of advice which i really appreciate but at the same time im freaking out now. she told me that i should take the gre again and try to improve my verbal score of 450 and essay of 3.5 (my math was 610). I work as a part time nanny of a family with a special needs daughter and she suggested that i use them as a recommender (which i already did). BUT she said that should only be used as an extra. Like.. if a school asks for 3 letters I should give them 3 from professor's and then use the one form my employer as extra. I saw the letter from the employer and I thought it was really good and still talks about the field but I understand what she is saying. What do you guys think? Should I try to get a 4th letter from another professor?

So there is the final update... Over the past day we have processed around 11 million jobs out of the 12 million that were in queue at that time. Please bear in mind that over this past day, more jobs for notifications are also created. So while the queue has been dropping, we are still not fully caught up at this point, due to backlog and new jobs. We have roughly 3 million jobs still pending that involve the notification system in some manner. We had hoped we could have fully cleared the queue in a day, but unfortunately we can't clear it too quickly, since we need the rest of the site to operate normally. From our current perspective on the amount of jobs that are left in queue, and how many it has processed thus far, we believe it will take around another 8 - 12 hours to process everything.
And finally some answers to some questions:

I have never written a SOP so I am just going off the cuff. I was going for interesting/why-when I figured out I wanted to pursue autism as a specialty for speech. Please don't rip me to shreds if this is totally wrong! :)
"Little Bear, Little Bear sing a song. Little Bear, Little Bear...” the words would soon become unintelligible. Staring at his toy the kindergartener with autism seemed lost in himself at that very moment. Covering his toy, trying to get him to make a verbal choice I would ask, “Are we working for the toy or a break”? Sometimes his eyes would meet mine, he would answer in a sweet voice and we would follow through with his response. Most of of the time the volume level escalated, “Little Bear! Little Bear!...”. The knot in my stomach tightened each time communication broke down between us and his frustration level rose because we were not understanding one another. It was after a year of anguish and wanting more for my little kindergartener that I knew this is the area that I wanted to focus my career on.

Hi! I have a few questions about speech pathology in Australia. I noticed last time there was an Australia-specific question, a few people popped up, so hopefully there’s someone out there that can answer.
1. Do you think employers see a difference between the bachelor courses and the graduate entry masters? I know they probably shouldn’t, but do they? Someone told me that somebody told them (yeah, I know how silly that sounds) that she would never hire a graduate from the masters course for reasons that I forget now. If this is in any way indicative of employers out there, then it worries me slightly.
2. This is specifically about the masters course at UQ. Do you know if there’s a quota for entry into this course and if so, what is it? (for domestic students, and even a guess will do) I notice that the prerequisite GPA is really low, only 4.0 compared to 5.0 for most other unis with this course, so I’m mostly wondering if that GPA is really representative of the actual GPA you’ll need to get in? (I’ve emailed about this but I guess they’re really busy at the moment and haven’t answered)
3. There was somebody a few months ago asking about the masters course at UQ and if you’re out there I’d just like to know how you’re finding it? Thanks!

I was just wondering....my undergraduate program is in the top 10 speech and hearing in the country....do grad schools consider the diffculty of your undergrad program during the admissions process?
Is a GPA from one school the same as the GPA from any other, or do I get a little more leeway?
Thank you so much, this community has been VERY helpful!

Hey everyone!!
I was wondering if anyone has any good therapy suggestions for final consonant deletion. I'm working with the preschool population, and am having difficulty in the creativity department!! :)
Thanks!

First of all, I jsut want to thank everyone that's been responding to my posts. It's been so helpful!
I'm looking at some schools in NY:
CUNY Hunter
CUNY Brooklyn
Long Island University Brooklyn
I really only want to apply to one or two schools in NY and I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about which are more competetive than others, what they are like, etc.
my gpa is a 3.36, major gpa something like a 3.56, and GRE 1280 (540 verbal, 740 math)
I don't want to waste money applying places that I won't get into!
Any advice or info about any of these school would be helpful. I have of course looked them up on edfind/their websites but i'd like a little more info!
Thanks!
